They are taken with no notice – from their beds, their schools, their mother’s arms: red-headed children, known as the Fireborn, gifted with pyrokinesis.
They are raised in isolation from the outside world and trained to lead the King’s formidable army against all outside forces. One of the Fireborn will be chosen as the Phoenix: a Fireborn of phenomenal fire power and rumoured to be able to heal the sick – and even bring back the dead.
The King has decided the new Phoenix will be his wife.
Sixteen year old Jessalyn is one of the Fireborn. She is also carrying a secret: she alone has held on to the memory of the family she was torn from twelve years prior, and she is determined to find them again.
When Jessa’s best friend mysteriously dies the day she is to marry the king’s son, the desirable Dragon Prince, Jessa is chosen as the new Phoenix. Horrified by her future, Jessa escapes from the comfortable palace life, only to be hunted down in a desperate attempt to return her to the king.
Young adult high fantasy.
