On Beta Reading and Unfortunate Gaming Mishaps

Lately, I’ve been doing more beta-reading than writing. Reading is taking up a lot of time. I’ve been reading published books as well, and dreaming about the books I’m going to buy when I get back to Australia.

I beta read the most phenomenal dystopian by a sixteen year old that blew my mind – I thought I was a good writer, and then I read that. It was really, really awesome. I hope it finds a home really soon. It impresses me that a sixteen year old can not only finish a novel (I had finished about three novellas by that age, but never an actual novel) but the able to write with that depth, knowledge of world history, and the technique? Phenomenal. I’m strangely proud of her, even though I’ve never met her. That’s the power of the internetz for you.

I’ve started beta-reading a literary novel – or maybe it’s a mystery thriller… we’re not quite sure. Hopefully I’ll be able to shed some light on that. This one came out of NaNoWriMo, so it’s lovely to see people making headway with their November novels. The Edge of Darkness was a NaNo novel as well. In other news, the other day I played the Sims 3 after not playing it for a while. I almost had to re-learn things, because I’ve been playing The Sims Medieval. I was wondering if I could kick the parents out and leave their teen when disaster struck my fourth-generation household. The teenager was having her birthday party, and as she blew out the candle, the table and all the chairs caught fire, quickly spreading to all the guests. And because she was a Party Animal, all the invited guests had come and filled this little room so that the fire fighters couldn’t get in. Four Sims died, including the parents of the teenager. Tragic? Yes. Hilarious? Also, yes.

Worst. Birthday. Ever.

Yeah, so I took a picture. I had a feeling it’d be blog-worthy.

      Hey, I legitimately tried to save everyone. I was sad when the parents died. Not a lot, because I’d already achieved their lifetime wishes, but still. That wasn’t the plan. If I wanted them to die in a fire I would have removed the doors.

      I’d rather leave her nameless for the time being. For a start, she’s only sixteen. I also don’t know how she feels me talking about her so I better alert her to this post. Also, she’s hoping to get the book published so I’d rather not talk about her intellectual property and everything. Sorry.

    LOL.

    I love the Sims. Once I had a third-generation Knowledge Sim, and she was like…the best ever. She could do anything and everything. She had about four days left as an adult, and I didn’t want to let her go, so I stupidly made her into a vampire. All was well, and she was livin’ it up downtown, until the doorbell rang and I went to answer it without pausing the game. I don’t know why I didn’t pause. I guess I forgot. Anyway, when I came back, the sun had come up on the nightclub she was bringin’ down, and she’d burnt to a cinder.

    Now that’s what you call ironic.

    LMAO!!!! I’ve never actually played any of the Sims games (yes, i know, it’s crazy!) but OMG that’s hilarious (yet tragic!) that your Sim caught the house on fire and her parents died (and 2 others). LMAO that you took a photo of it too – that’s awesome!

    i think i might have to start playing the Sims i think – esp. if you can turn them into vampires!! that sounds wicked!

    any recommendations on what Sims I should start with? I’m assuming theres tons of different versions?

      Yeah, there are HEAPS of different versions. You may as well bypass The Sims 1 as it doesn’t even run on my computer anymore. The Sims 2 has a wealth of awesome expansion packs and that’s the one where you can turn your Sim into a vampire and have pets and so on. The SIms 3 is yet another improvement over the SIms 2 with some expansions available (I don’t have any of them). Then there’s the Sims Medieval which I also love, but is a bit different in that you only control one Sim at a time.
